POLICE have asked the community for help after fire crews tackled a succession of blazes across Saddleworth this afternoon (Tuesday April 9).
At different points over a two-hour period emergency services tackled fires between Den Lane and Ladcastle Road in Uppermill, on land off Gatehead Road, Dobcross and two at the burial grounds off Gellfield Lane, also Uppermill.
Flames quickly took hold in a stiff Spring breeze which also caused smoke to drift across a number of villages. There were unconfirmed reports of several other pockets of fire.
“We need the community to be vigilant and to be our eyes,” said a police spokesperson. “If they see a fire or anything suspicious then phone 999.”
Fire crews from Oldham, Mossley and Stalybridge attended the scenes after Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service received its first call at 1.23pm.
“Three fires were identified,” said a GMFRS spokesperson. “Moorland was accessed on foot and crews used beaters to put out the fires.
“We also used plus the assistance of an air unit drone which helped direct crews to the incidents.”
An investigation into the cause of the incidents has been launched.
