England flags to fly high across community for St George’s Day events

england-flagFLAGS WILL be hoisted high across the community as residents celebrate St George’s Day.

Oldham Council is encouraging residents to join in the events, which begin with the raising of the St George’s Flag at the Civic Centre on Thursday, April 23.

Councillor Fida Hussain, the Mayor of Oldham, will be joined by civic dignitaries and community representatives to hoist up the flag at 8.30am.

Cllr Hussain said: “St George’s Day is a poignant national occasion and Oldham Council is proud to fly the flag of the patron saint of England as part of our tradition of recognising events in the national and civic calendar.

“It’s great to see a number of other events organised by the community and celebrating this patriotic occasion.”

WoolyKnit in Diggle are hosting a St George’s Day ‘Flags and Brass’ event with Diggle Brass Band at 7.30pm. Tickets £25, book by calling 01457 878660.

Saturday, April 25
An annual Concert for St George will be presented by the Saddleworth Male Voice Choir on Saturday, April 25 at 7.30pm in the Civic Hall, Uppermill. Special guest this year will be the Saddleworth-based folk group the Hometowners with Tony Downes. Tickets cost £10 from Saddleworth Museum, Uppermill Post Office or David Davies: 01457 873182.

Saturday, April 25

Saturday, April 25
Entertainment for all the family at Apfel Lane Community Centre, Chadderton, from 1-3pm. A fun-filled day for all of the family involving bric-a-brac stalls, a bouncy castle, football shootout and refreshments.

Sunday, April 26
Celebrations at Royton Town Hall from 11am-2pm. Enjoy a number of fun activities including; Saddleworth Donkeys, circus acts, face painting, afternoon tea, craft and food stalls.
