A GRIPPING drama that is both epic and intimate is the next production brought to The Millgate Arts Centre stage by Saddleworth Players.
‘The Children’ by Lucy Kirkwood will run from February 15-22 at the theatre in Delph, with shows starting at 7.30pm nightly.
Hazel and Robin are living out their retirement in a cottage on the English east coast. But when former colleague Rose visits out of the blue, uncomfortable memories and relationship tensions resurface.
On top of this the cottage is at the edge of an eroding cliff, electricity is rationed and there is a Geiger counter beside the door.
Rose’s shocking reason for being there and their former careers as nuclear scientists combine to threaten all their futures.
Director Carol Davies commented: “For whom are you prepared to die? Your children? Other people’s children? Future generations?
“Hazel, a 67-year-old physicist, enjoys her retirement. She is living the good life; she gardens, does yoga, eats well, has cows!
“She is the matriarchal rock on which her husband, her children and grandchildren depend. An avid radio 4 listener, she prides herself on doing the right thing and leading a responsible life.
“But then there is an accident at the power station, an exclusion zone, deaths. And a ghost from the past arrives at the door making demands and questioning all she holds dear.”
