Fantastic fundraiser smashes target for Cancer Research

DELIGHTED residents and staff at Chew Vale Court in Greenfield are celebrating after raising more than three times their target amount for charity.

Beckie Crickett, Court manager, explained they hoped to raise £300 from a fundraising afternoon in aid of Cancer Research.

But their event, which included refreshments, a raffle and tombola, went down a treat and raised £750, which was topped up to £1,000 by a £250 donation from Northern Rail through Gift Aid.

Beckie said: “The tenants and I decided to raise money for Cancer Research. This decision was not hard to make as we have all been touched by cancer in one way or another.

“Our aim was £300; we are only a small scheme of 17 apartments, so this amount seemed a reasonable aim. We would never have dreamed the amount that we did make!

“The day was fantastic. We had fresh scones delivered by Scona in Greenfield and we had Guinness cake homemade by a tenant’s daughter and a fresh Victoria sponge homemade by Delores, a tenant at Wood Square.

“Doreen, who lives at Chew Vale, made this event bigger than we originally planned. She tramped the streets of Greenfield in the cold and getting wet in the rain to blagged prizes from businesses and sell tickets for the raffle.

“It was a tiring and busy experience, but one we will repeat next year.”

Raffle prizes were donated by tenants, local businesses, and tombola prizes were donated by the tenants of Chew Vale and its sister scheme Wood Square.
