ASHTON UNITED 1, OLDHAM ATHLETIC 3
Uppermill’s Frank Bunn made a winning start as Oldham Athletic manager following a 3-1 win at non-league Ashton United.
Goals from centre-back Peter Clarke, trialist Jonathan Benteke and new-boy Jose Baxter gave Latics victory on a rock hard and difficult playing surface at Hurst Cross.
Bunn used a total of 20 players, including four trialists, in the first of five games before the start of their Sky Bet League Two campaign.
Clarke slotted home the opening goal from close range after six minutes as Latics finished the opening period 1-0 ahead.
Benteke doubled the lead early in the second half with a neat finish after his initial effort was parried by keeper Dave Carnell.
Latics saved the best until last when Baxter found the net with a terrific shot on the run to convert a cross from the right.
An Ashton trialist pulled a goal back after 88 minutes from the penalty spot after Nic Evangelinos was brought down by keeper Zeus De La Paz.
