A UNIQUE networking group is on offer to support and promote independent businesses in Saddleworth and Lees.
The Saddleworth and Lees Independent Business Network was set up by Scouthead entrepreneur Carol Oldham in February 2012 and is now a 230-strong group.
It offers free networking opportunities to any business in the area, whether they are big or small, as members come together to offer each other support and advice.
Members range from sole traders working from home or elsewhere and full or part time, to large businesses such as hotels and restaurants employing a number of people.
Carol said: “We are in a unique position in Saddleworth as we have great butchers, bakers, even candle makers.
“By shopping locally, you get quality, uniqueness and great value for money as well the real social and economic benefits of supporting local businesses.
“It’s so convenient – basically everything you could need is just round the corner or is available at a click of the mouse.
“There’s no doubting however that it is a hard time for business,” added the mother of one. “We are all feeling the pinch financially but must take measures to ensure we do not lose our local traders.
“The network has been set up because Saddleworth businesses are in desperate need of creative promotion and support before it is too late.
“It’s not about competition now, businesses need to pull together and there is real strength in numbers.”
The network took part in Small Business Saturday in December to offer special discounts and deals for one day only to their customers.
And they already have several plans in the pipeline for 2014, including a member directory, a re-launched website, and a local business conference, as well as their trademark informal social evenings.
