STOUT-HEARTED MEMBERS of Saddleworth Rotary and Clarion Cycling Club have teamed up to organise a Fathers’ Day Sportive to raise funds and awareness of prostate cancer.
The Turnpike Challenge will see riders line up for the challenging yet enjoyable 25-mile cycle on Sunday, June 21.
Starting between 8am and 10am at Diggle Band Club, the ride will take participants on A and B roads including two moderate climbs onto the Pennine Moors.
The ride, expected to take around three to four hours, will pass through Uppermill, Greenfield, Meltham, Linthwaite, Slaithwaite and Marsden.
Half-way refreshments/aid point are provided and there will be tempting portions of pie and peas , tea and cake at the end of the challenge.
The event was the brain child of Jon Stocker, from Saddleworth Rotary.
He said: “If you fancy doing something a little different on Fathers Day why not sign up yourself and other budding cyclists in your family to do the challenge.”
Co-organiser Chris Moreman from the Clarion Cycling Club added: “We are really excited to be working with the Saddleworth Rotary to put on such a worthwhile event.
“We want as many people as possible to enjoy this inaugural sportive. We hope to continue this event for some years to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK and other worthwhile charities.”
Requirements to the ride include a road or Hybrid bike in full working order and riders must wear helmets to validate insurance cover.
Partners CycleTech Oldham will provide free mechanical support on the day and there will be a roaming van and cyclists for mechanicals and returns to base.
They will only charge for parts and will be happy to give advice on bike fit and set up if needed.
The cost of entering the challenge is £12.50 via online registration or £15 fee on the day. More details and application forms can be obtained at: www.turnpikechallenge.co.uk
