Generous Saddleworth charity pool sides continue tradition

THE SADDLEWORTH Charity Pool League has lived to its name by giving away £500 to good causes.

The charity money was donated by the teams that won most “gallons” in the season.

In the case of first division winners Shepherd’s Boy they gave their £250 to Dr Kershaw’s Hospice and second division victors Granby, Uppermill, donated to Headway, the charity that helps improve the lives of people with brain injuries.

Years ago the gallon was a game played at the end of a darts, crib or any competitive pub game. The teams usually select their best player and in the past the losing team had to buy the winning team a drink each, hence the word gallon as in a gallon of Beer.

These days with drink driving and pressures of work the day after, the league decided to keep the tradition but drop the beer. The ‘Gallon Fiver’ being paid to the league and allows for the distribution to charities by the overall winners.

As for the league, five games into the new season and Waterhead-based Shepherd’s Boy are the pacesetters with 35 points, one ahead of second-placed Uppermill Commercial ‘A’.

Springhead Liberal ‘A’ lead the way in division two after winning all five of their games. They have 37 points which is 12 clear of nearest challengers Delph Club who, admittedly, have played one less match.
