Get creative at a Bank Holiday Bonanza

GET CRAFTY at a three-day creative bonanza this May bank holiday weekend as locals are encouraged to get hands on making, doing, and having a go.

‘Be Creative’ will be held at the Civic Hall in Uppermill on May 3-5 with stall holders from around the area offering products, demonstrations and interactive crafts.IMG_6093

And with something for both adults and children, this is the chance to get stuck in and try something new.

The event, hosted by the Saddleworth Creative Network(SCN), is the first of its kind and a development of the group’s regular bi-monthly events.

Claire Hilton, who launched the network in 2011, said: “There has always been a thriving craft and creative community in Saddleworth and I like to think of the SCN as part of the larger craft movement in the area.

“There are many other creative people in our villages, such as ‘Craft Co-operative’ in Delph, ‘WoolyKnits’ in Diggle, ‘The Stamp Pad’ and ‘Style and Salvage’ in Greenfield.

“My aim in running the SCN is to bring all these together in a great big, happy, creative family, through support and networking online, as well as through the regular craft fairs.”IMG_6182

The Bank Holiday Bonanza follows the network’s first free event of the year in March when they hosted a ‘Spring Gift & Craft Festival’.

More than 50 stall holders sold their handmade craft and gift products, including knitted items, jewellery, candles, woodwork, photographs and more to deliver a more than average market.

Homemade delicacies were also on sale, including jams and chutneys from ‘Spread the Love’, tasty pies from the ‘Little Saddleworth Pie Company’ and decadent handmade chocolates from ‘Sugar Violets’.

Face-painting, lucky dip and free balloons kept the children amused while the teashop area, run by ‘Something Yummy Cakes & Catering’, served hot and cold food, drinks and homemade cakes.

All traders generously donated items for the tombola, with proceeds collected for local charity ‘The Samantha Jones Trust’, which challenges childhood leukaemia.
