CARNIVAL: Locals enjoying the carnival in 2013

WANT TO get fitter and fancy giving running a try, but not sure where to start?

They key is to set yourself a goal and nothing could be better than the new Milltown Carnival 7K, which is set to take place on Sunday, June 22 at 12 noon.

Hot on the heels on the hugely successful – and formidable – Milltown to Moors Half Marathon, plus last year’s inaugural Oldham 10k, the new Carnival Race will start and finish at The Lion’s Den in Alexandra Park on Carnival day.

Open to anyone aged 15 or over, it will be a fun new addition to Oldham’s growing race calendar.

The Milltown Carnival 7k is organised by Oldham Community Leisure (OCL) and the Carnival Management Group, organisers of the Oldham Carnival and RootZ Festival. It costs £7 to enter in advance (£5 if you’re affiliated to a UK Athletics club), or £8 on the day, and there are just 400 places available, so get in quickly!

Race Director Alan Keane, Senior Health and Physical Activity Development Officer at OCL, says: ”We had such a fantastic response to our new 10k last year and we’ve seen a huge surge in people interested in taking up running, so the logical next step was to add a shorter race to give more people the chance to get involved.”

Whether you are a beginner or a more experienced runner looking to improve your performance, there are all sorts of running support in Oldham.

You can join OCL’s weekly running groups on a Thursday evening 6-7pm at the Radclyffe Athletics track (beginners) and Wed 6.30-7.45pm (intermediates), which aim to get new runners off the mark and up to a level where they can take part in the weekly 5K ParkRun, before building themselves up to the new Carnival race. If you pick up the new discount OCL Active card, which costs £2 a year, a running group session will cost just a £1.

To enter online please visit www.milltownraces.co.uk (please note there is a £1.20 booking fee) or send postal entries to Alan Keane, Oldham Community Leisure, Lord Street, Oldham OL1 3HA, making cheques payable to Oldham Community Leisure.

The closing date for entries is June 13 unless the 400 places are filled before this date.
