Get involved: Community Day to showcase best of Saddleworth groups and clubs

‘GET INVOLVED, it’s your community’ is the cry ahead of a special event to promote and share the plethora of groups, clubs, associations and organisations across the area.

The ‘Community Day’ will be held on Sunday, April 2 at the Civic Hall in Uppermill from 11am-3pm.

The day is the brainchild of Parish Councillor Jamie Curley who wanted to bring together groups from Saddleworth and Oldham to share what they do and also attract new members.

Community groups and associations will be able to showcase their activities to attract new members and volunteers, as well as network with other groups, share projects, ideas and resources.

The whole community is welcome to come along to see what is available, find a group where they can meet new people, learn new skills or give back to the community.

There will also be representatives from Action Together who will offer advice, workshops and training for community and volunteer groups on setting up, running and fundraising.

And The Real Junk Food Project will be there on the day to serve up a treat.

Cllr Curley said: “It is about informing the community of what is available so they can get involved with a group that suits them.

“Volunteering can be really rewarding and people can meet new friends, learn new skills and get real satisfaction from playing an active part in the community.

“It can also be a way for people to enhance their CV if they are job hunting as employers always look at outside activities positively.

“We already have a number of groups who have booked spaces to attend and it is shaping up to be a really exciting day.”

He added: “Having been involved with the Parish Council for nearly two years I am constantly struck by the fantastic community spirit we have.

“Through working with groups such as SSYCA who are reenergising the Satellite Centre in Greenfield, the community associations and others I realised that volunteers and groups are the very heartbeat of our community.

“However, they usually rely entirely on volunteers, people giving up their spare time and offering their expertise but sometimes volunteers can be thin on the ground.”

If your group/club would like to book a stand at the event please contact: Jane Soriente or Christine Wilson on 0161 770 6804 or email jane.soriente@oldham.gov.uk
