ORDEAL: Rachel beside her damaged car

Rachel Bullock was travelling along Featherstall Road South in Oldham when group of up to 15 youths threw stones at her saloon car shattering the front passenger window and showering her boyfriend with glass.

Rachel, 22, from Springhead, said: “I saw these lads standing near the side of the dual carriageway and never thought anymore about it.

“Then suddenly, I heard a loud crash and there was glass all over the inside of the car. I was completely shocked but managed to maintain control of the car.”

Despite being covered with shards of glass, her boyfriend, Sean Ferguson, 24, a project manager, was unhurt but badly shaken.

Added Rachel, one of three children: “I found it hard to comprehend what had happened. It was all over in a matter of seconds. I just kept my hands in the wheel but before I managed to stop the boys had vanished.”

PC Carl Budgen of GMP’s Oldham Division, who is investigating the attack, said: “Throwing any kind of object at a moving vehicle is an extremely dangerous and foolish thing to do, and we absolutely condemn it.

“It is very likely a driver would be greatly distracted by this, and could end up having a serious, even fatal, accident which endangers other road users.

“Even if there is no accident, there is also a chance the vehicle may be damaged by the thrown object, which is another criminal offence we would prosecute.”

And a senior police spokesperson declared: “Throwing any object, clear in the knowledge it is likely to smash a window should it hit one, beggars belief.

“The consequences of this incident could have been severe for the victims, others on the road or pedestrians on the street. While the driver and passenger are clearly distressed they were, thankfully, not physically harmed.”

Anyone with information about the incident should call the police.
