Golden peal challenge to mark half century for Tower Captain

A GOLDEN peal will ring out from Saddleworth Church on Friday, June 12 as eight bellringers take on a special attempt to mark the Tower Captain’s 50th anniversary.

Jeff Brannan rang his first peal on the bells at the church 50 years ago to the day on June 12, 1965 along with Dennis Latham, who now lives near Altrincham.

Now, to commemorate the golden anniversary, he is teaming up with six other bellringers on Friday, June 12 to ring a challenging peal starting around 10am.

Jeff explained: “The method is called St Chad’s Delight Major, which was thought to be a suitably named method to mark the occasion.

“If all goes well, the ringing should take between two hours and 40 minutes to three hours.

“A pealdenotes in this case a continuous bellringing session where each bell rings at least 5,000 times and each sequence of eight bells is different – so quite a challenge!”

During the peal the ringers will be locked away in the tower and must not be disturbed as the ringing requires a lot of serious concentration.

Joining Jeff and Dennis in their attempt will be Peter Randall, Tower Captain of Moorside, Derek Thomas (Tower Captain at Oldham Parish Church), Alan F Scholfield, Jim Andrews and two others to be confirmed.

Saddleworth Church, which is celebrating its 800th anniversary this year, will be open through the event, with Tea, Coffee, soft drinks and cakes on sale.
