UNNECESSARY SIGNS are causing an eyesore on the doorstep to one of Saddleworth’s picturesque villages, claims a frustrated community group.

Street Scene Greenfield says unsightly signage near The Clarence, where at least six signs are attached to two lampposts, spoils the entrance to the area.
And despite reporting the signs to Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council three times and directly asking businesses to remove their signs, they claim no action has been taken.
Street Scene said: “The signs are totally unnecessary, unwanted and very unsightly.
“We know businesses are struggling and we have every sympathy, but there is a growing problem of businesses just fastening A-frames with chains to lamp posts.
“There are many other legitimate ways to advertise without doing this. It is just littering the village. We are keen to minimise the number of unnecessary signs.
“They have been reported to OMBC three times now and we have asked they remove them but nothing has happened.
“We now have yellow signs added to a number of lampposts advertising the new housing development ‘Greenfield Place’.
“In this day and age with sat nav, and the old way of doing it with maps, there is absolutely no need to advertise houses this way, it’s just street clutter.

“The problem with lots of signage is it encourages even more. People see it and add to it because they think it’s ok as it’s already there.”
After inquires by the Independent, Oldham Council confirmed the white signs pictured are historic direction signs and need to remain.
The housing development is an AA sign and has received approval for six months but the council promised to pass on details of yellow direction signs, which appear to be unauthorised, to their highways team to make arrangements to remove them.
