SPECIAL GUEST: Paul Braithwaite

Paul Braithwaite from Delph played a major role in the successful ascent of Everest South West Face in 1975, and has a host of other major mountaineering conquests over a lifetime career.

He has climbed in the most extreme and remote regions of the world, including The Arctic, Canada, Alaska, South America, Russia, Nepal, Africa and Tibet.

Paul is currently a trustee of Community Action Nepal, a charity raising funds to build schools, health posts and porter shelters in the remote, poorer regions of the country.

Closer to home, in October he will present awards to the first Above and Beyond recipients chosen by committees from Saddleworth community or residents groups.

Paul, who lives in Delph, said: “I’m proud to be asked to present these awards.

“Saddleworth has remarkable people who do great things, often without seeking recognition.”

The Above and Beyond Awards are part funded by the communities themselves and are coordinated by journalist Ken Bennett.

If YOU know someone who has gone the extra mile to help a neighbour or the community, send your nomination to your local group (listed below) before the closing date of  Wednesday, August 31.
