Guild gives £13,000 boost to RNLI

MORE than £13,000 will bring a big boost to the RNLI after another busy year of fundraising by the dedicated Saddleworth Ladies’ Lifeboat Guild.

The staggering amount was revealed as the Guild held its AGM in January at The White Hart, Lydgate.

The news didn’t stop there as Joan Halkyard, chairman of the guild for a decade, announced her retirement.

However, she was voted in as president, a position which has been vacant for twenty years, so will continue to represent the Guild when appropriate.

Deborah Heginbotham agreed to be acting chairman and co-ordinate this year’s three coffee mornings and the Cream Tea, continuing a family tradition as her mother, Sue Swift, is a long-time committee member.

The one remaining Chairman’s responsibility – the Annual Luncheon at The White Hart – will be organised by Sue Haines and Joan.

There was another significant change as Maxine Bell stood down as secretary after eight years but will continue to organise the annual quiz at The Royal George, Greenfield.

The position of secretary will be filled by Kathryn Mills, another follower of family tradition since her mother-in-law, Sue Mills, is a past chairman and remains an active committee member.

Joan said: “All in all, the AGM provided a very positive basis for the future of the Guild, with all the remaining positions being filled by their present, successful, occupants.”

The SLLG are still looking for dates and locations for this year’s events in aid of the RNLI, but some have already been confirmed:

• Wednesday, March 6 – Coffee Morning at Uppermill Methodist
• Tuesday, July 2 – Cream Tea at the Civic Hall, Uppermill
• Sunday, September 29 – Annual Luncheon at the White Hart
• Wednesday, October 23 – Coffee Morning at Uppermill Methodist
• Saturday, November 2 – Coffee Morning at Delph Methodist
• Friday, November 15 – Quiz Night at the Royal George, Greenfield.
