A TEAM of community angels in Diggle is worried their treasured diamonds could lose their sparkle unless younger volunteers get involved to help out.
The former old folks’ welfare committee was reformed as the Diggle Diamonds twenty four years ago with aims to monitor the village’s older generation.
But now the committee says unless they can recruit younger members the future of the popular club is in jeopardy.
The group meets once a month and throughout the year organises events, trips and a special Christmas party.
Over the years they have raised £50,000 and they need £3,000 per year to maintain their annual programme which includes help with shopping, medical appointments, transport and other services.
Mike Hall, the Diamonds’ stalwart chairman, said sadly: “For the last two years we have advertised for new younger committee members without success.
“At our last AGM we voted to commit to continue for this year only. Six out of our nine committee members are over seventy and cannot continue to carry out the duties to have a successful Diamonds committee.
“The decision was not taken likely and it is with deep regret that we have had to take this course of action.
“But if no new young members can be recruited before the end of this year we will have to dissolve the Diggle Diamonds committee in 2015.”
He added: “We appeal to the good people of Diggle to join us and help maintain this important committee for the older generation in the village.
“We need to plan for the future so all the good work over the years will not be wasted.”
The Diamonds’ main fundraising events are coffee mornings every two months at the Hanging Gate and a Diggle house to house collection via envelopes.
