Horses for courses at annual fun TREC event at Friezland Arena

A GROUP of riders and their trusty steeds met at Friezland Arena to take part in the annual fun TREC event, now in its 18th year.

Enjoying the view on the ride

The orienteering section took them up and around the country lanes above Uppermill, past Saddleworth Church and into Diggle from where they had to climb up the top of Harrop Edge, down through Dobcross and on to the Delph Donkey to Brownhills and one of the checkpoints.

Their journey then took them back onto the old railway, and back to Friezland where the other phases and judges were waiting for them.

Fortunately, the weather was kind and they were able to take in the spectacular scenery and views.

Even though the weather then put a damper on the event everyone completed their control of paces and obstacles successfully, including walking through water – they should have had plenty of practice with that while they were out on route.

Other obstacles included riding over a bridge, negotiating a gate and going over a jump.

The overall winners were Rachael Wilmot and Alex Sales with Alex riding her young horse at his first TREC competition.

Local riders Paula Collins-Stoneman and Hayley Wild were in fifth place overall with Paula taking third place for the obstacles.
