EXPLORING SADDLEWORTH’S beautiful countryside is now easier than ever thanks to exciting additions to the Parish Council’s website.
In a bid to boost tourism to the area, the website, which was launched about 15 months ago, now includes six intriguing walks across the villages for visitors and locals alike to enjoy.
The walks have been reproduced by kind permission of Chris Maylor, author of ‘Saddleworth Discovery Walks’ which details 20 local routes.
The six included on the Parish Council website are of varying lengths and difficulties, from easy walks to high moorland treks, and all include places of historical interest along the way.
Cllr Neil Allsopp, the driving force behind the new website, explained: “The new website for the Parish Council has been very well received.
“One of the things we are conscious of is the Saddleworth economy is for a large part dependent on tourism.
“We have decided to try to do our bit online by having a tourism section on the website with information, advice and things to do.
“I saw Chris’s book and thought it was excellent. He kindly agreed to allow us to publish six of his walks on our website for no fee.
“Hopefully this will help walkers coming to Saddleworth find out a bit more about what is available away from the centre of Uppermill, as well as encourage locals to get walking too.”
Chris has also written ‘Oldham Discovery Walks’, with both books being enjoyed around the world, and he is already working on his next instalments.
He said: “I am so pleased to be asked to contribute to the website and help support tourism in Saddleworth.
“Hopefully it will help bring people in to see and enjoy what the area the has to offer.”
The Parish Council website also includes an interactive map, details of car parks, transport information, a calendar and videos of local events.
Oldham Council has also allowed the Parish Council to reproduce eight routes from Cycling in Saddleworth.
