It was a very good year…

A BUMPER amount was raised by Cancer Research UK’s Saddleworth Committee in the last financial year with a huge cheque of nearly £20,000 being handed over to the central fund.

This brought the total over the last three years to an impressive £45,000.

Chairman, Anne Sykes said she was delighted with this result which was announced by Treasurer Godfrey Adams at the committee’s Annual General Meeting at the Swan Inn Dobcross.

She particularly wanted to thank all those who had boosted the committee’s fund raising efforts with events of their own.

Dobcross and Delph Schools raised £1,300 while guests celebrating the Golden Wedding of local couple Brian and Doris Fort (now moved to Garstang) donated more than £1,000 in lieu of presents.

Tracey Barlow, of Greenfield, celebrated her 50th birthday with an attempt to make her mark in the Guinness Book of Record with a Custard Pie Throw and made nearly £3,000 for CR UK in the process.

A Comedy Night at the Royal George Pub brought in over £400 while Jean Illingworth held a Coffee Morning in memory of her sister who died of Pancreatic Cancer and handed over a cheque for nearly £600.

Anne said: “Donations In Memorium are always a welcome addition to our annual funds and we mustn’t forget the importance of the Charity Boxes; loose change dropped into boxes at retail outlets in Saddleworth provides us with valuable amounts each year.”

The Chairman also welcomed ideas from anyone who wants to raise money for CR UK, however small the event might be.

She adde: “We, as a committee, will always support your efforts if you need help.”
