Jim McMahon wins Oldham West and Royton seat with 10,722 majority

JIM MCMAHON is the new Labour MP for Oldham West and Royton after winning the by-election with a 10,722 majority.

The Oldham Council Leader beat UKIP into second place with 61.92 per cent of the vote as 40.26 per cent of the electorate turned out to vote.

Cllr McMahon said: “I am so proud of the Labour family and my town. Thank you so much for all your support and I’ll work hard to repay the trust you’ve shown in me.”

The by-election was called followed the death of Labour stalwart Michael Meacher in October, who had built up a majority of 14,738.

UKIP’s John Bickley took 6,487 votes, Conservative James Daly 2,596, Lib Dem Jane Brophy 1,024, Green Party candidate Simeon Hart 249 and Sir Oink-A-Lot of the Monster Raving Loony Party 141.
