COUNCILLOR Keith Lucas, who led a campaign opposed to Saddleworth School’s move to Diggle, has resigned from Saddleworth Parish Council.
Cllr Lucas, elected as an Independent candidate for the Dobcross Ward in 2015, sent his letter of intention prior to last month’s full council meeting on Monday, February 25.
“I have had serious concerns with issues and decisions taken by SPC over the last year and frankly only stayed on to give support to the local population that have loyally supported SDAG (Save Diggle Action Group) over the last four years,” he said.
“I would like to thank the handful of fellow councillors who bravely supported the idea that Uppermill is still the best solution for Saddleworth and felt strongly democracy and decency and true facts, not spin, should be available to the public.”
The Parish Council has confirmed the vacancy created by Mr Lucas’s resignation will not be filled before the next round of local elections on May 2.
Clerk Pam Bailey confirmed: “In accordance with section 86(c) of the Local Government Act 1972 Saddleworth Parish Council declares a casual vacancy in the Diggle and Dobcross Ward.
“As Mr. Lucas’ term of office had less than six months remaining before the elections on May 2, 2019 the Parish Council is not required to fill this vacancy.”
