Kind-hearted villagers come together for road accident victim

Kind-hearted Saddleworth shoppers and businesses have rallied together after an Oldham Council worker was badly injured in a road accident in Uppermill.

The Independent understands Martin Burke, 65, was treated at Salford Royal Hospital after the incident on Wednesday, November 8 and is now recovering at home.

His plight touched the community in the Parish’s busiest village where he worked as a road sweeper and litter collector.

But Allan Mallalieu from the DIY Centre on the High Street has still been overwhelmed by the response after launching a fund for Martin and his family.

Nearly £800 had been raised by the time the Independent went to press.

“I used to see Martin most days when I came to work,” explained Allan from Springhead.

“He would always let on and say ‘hello’ and it’s terrible what’s happened. So, I decided to set up the appeal never thinking it would be so well supported.

“Customers who come into the shop have donated spare change. And nearly every business I asked gave something.

“It’s been pretty much 100 per cent across the board. Java gave £50 and others have contributed tenners and £20,” added Allan who handed his collections to OMBC’s Unity Partnership based at St Chad’s House in Uppermill.

“Hopefully, Martin will eventually return to work and the money will help towards the family’s Christmas.”

Additionally, to his fund raising efforts, Allan says Martin’s accident highlights the need for greater speed awareness along Uppermill High Street.

“The attitude of some drivers is appalling,” he told the Independent. “If something isn’t done then it’s only a matter of time before someone will get killed.

“And that is going to happen before they do something because drivers just won’t slow down.”
