WINDOWS OF homes and businesses throughout Uppermill will spring to life this festive season for a unique ‘living advent calendar’.
Each day from December 1 to Christmas Eve, a new window will unveil its colourful display just like a conventional advent calendar.
Villagers and tourists alike will be able to hunt out the windows in a trail across the village until the life-sized calendar finishes on Twelfth Night on January 5.
The Uppermill ‘living advent calendar’ is now in its third year after proving a hit with residents since being launched in 2013.
Organiser Erica Ryan explained: “I had never heard of a life-sized advent calendar until I just happened to visit the one in Saltaire just after Christmas 2012, and I absolutely loved it.
“Some of the windows were breathtakingly beautiful, some were funny and inventive, and a few were just plain odd!
“It felt like a gift – people had got together and planned and decorated with no other agenda, just to bring Christmas cheer to whoever happened to pass by.

“I immediately knew I wanted an Advent Calendar like that in Uppermill and recruited friends and acquaintances to make it happen.
“The calendar seems to have caught people’s imagination and we have several new contributors this year – it will be well worth looking out for.”
Last year’s theme was music and was so popular that on some days two new vibrant designs were revealed for villagers to view.
