AN ACTING academy founded by Shameless and The Apprentice star Sarah Byrne is celebrating a decade of nurturing young performers from across Greater Manchester and beyond.
Sarah Byrne Acting Academy, which supports aspiring actors aged five to 25, has grown from a local initiative into a recognised pathway into film, television and further education.
Former students are now appearing on major TV productions and training at leading performing arts institutions.
Sarah, 36, from Lees, set up the academy with a focus on accessibility and community, drawing students not only from Saddleworth and Oldham but also from places such as the Isle of Man and the North East.

Her motivation, she has said, was rooted in giving back and setting an example for her daughter Sadie.
“There is incredible talent right here in our community, young people just need someone to believe in them and open the door,” said Sarah.
Over the past 10 years, the academy has helped launch the careers of performers including Harley Hamilton, known for his role as Oscar, Charity’s grandson in Emmerdale. Harley now works as an Assistant Director alongside Sarah.
Other former students include Eryn Hall, who is set to appear in a new BBC series, and Phoebe Weston, who features in a forthcoming film due to air later this year.
Beyond screen roles, many alumni have continued their studies at institutions such as Manchester University Drama, LIPA and The Hammond School.
“Seeing local children move on to places like LIPA and The Hammond makes every bit of hard work worth it,” said academy producer Sue Burns.
The academy operates from Positive Steps in Oldham and the Manchester Maccabi Community and Sports Club in Prestwich.
The 10-year milestone will be marked with a new stage production of The Secret Garden, due to be performed at Uppermill Civic Hall this month – the choice of venue reflecting the academy’s ongoing commitment to using local spaces and reinvesting in the area.
