Making healthy eating fun for children at the Satellite Centre

‘HANDS ON’ sessions at Saddleworth Cookery School are helping to make healthy eating fun for youngsters.

The cookery school is one of many local groups making use of the excellent facilities at the recently re-opened Satellite Centre on Wellington Road in Greenfield.

The school currently runs Wednesday and Thursday after-school sessions for children aged five to 12 years, as well as sessions during the school holidays.

Pam Jones, leader and manager of the school said: “Children come because they enjoy the ‘hands on’ sessions and love eating the tasty food they make.

“Parents keep bringing them back because they enjoy watching their children make and then enjoy healthy food.

“We work hard to develop sound basic skills, working at the children’s pace. Within a few lessons, the youngsters will be confidently chopping, dicing, peeling and grating.”

Using the Satellite Centre’s downstairs kitchen facilities, at least two dishes are prepared in each session, along with a snack which children sit and eat together.

There is always plenty of food to take home along with recipe sheets so the dishes can be made again.

When time allows, children can sit and eat some of the main courses they’ve made together, as everyone has usually worked up an appetite.

We encourage discussion about food and enjoy watching children become more involved in what they’re eating,” said Pam.

“We do include some ‘sweet treats’ but always encourage children to develop a healthy relationship with food and promote a balanced diet.

“They also find out about recycling and reducing food waste and the importance of food hygiene and safety.”

With prior notice the school can welcome children with any food allergies or intolerance, religious preferences and lifestyle choices.

Parents are welcome to make use of the tea and coffee making facilities and can work alongside their child or just sit and watch. Children over seven years old can be left to enjoy the session without parents.
