DESIGN STUDENTS are collaborating with homelessness charity Emmaus Mossley to create products that reflect personal identity from materials that would otherwise be sent to landfill.
Second year undergraduate student Charlie Manthorp and postgraduate students Eade Moon Hemingway and Laura-Jane Atkinson are working with the charity as part of their studies at Manchester School of Art.
Three Dimensional Design student, Charlie, 21, has teamed up with four formerly homeless people – known as companions – supported by Emmaus Mossley.
Charlie said: “This project has been an amazing opportunity for a trade of skills, ideas, and stories.
“Through workshops, I have worked with the companions to explore their own creativity and identity in a variety of media while they have provided countless narratives and ideas that are now embedded within the work.
“Delivering the creative workshops has been a great experience and learning curve for me as has getting to know the amazing companions, staff and volunteers at Emmaus.”
MA Design students Eade and Laura-Jane are working together under the name of Rive Studio and aim to challenge the idea that products made from recycled materials should “look recycled”.
The pair are currently experimenting with waste materials from Emmaus Mossley that would otherwise be sent to landfill.
Alison Hill, Project Director at Emmaus Mossley, said: “We are delighted to be partnering up with Manchester Metropolitan University and design students Charlie, Eade and Laura.
“They’re working on some great projects that will build skills, knowledge and creativity in our community as well as reducing our waste materials.
“All three students are keen to build on the initial project, developing the products further with a view to selling them to raise money for Emmaus Mossley.”
Emmaus Mossley supports 24 formerly homeless people by providing them with a home and work in a community setting.
The charity runs a social enterprise in Mossley, selling donated and upcycled furniture, household goods and vintage wares.
