Mayor of Oldham to face fears with aeroplane jump for charity

THE brave Mayor of Oldham is facing one of his biggest fears as he jumps out of an aeroplane for charity on Saturday, May 5.

Cllr Shadab Qumer at the Saddleworth Literary Festival at Saddleworth School in April

Cllr Shadab Qumer is terrified of heights but has agreed to take on the challenge to raise money for The Mayor’s Appeal Fund.

He said: “I am really scared of heights and don’t like aeroplanes at all. When I fly, I don’t sit next to the window. I don’t really even like talking about it.

“But I said for my charities I will do anything. So my very nice committee decided it would be a good idea to throw me out of a plane!

“But it is for a good cause and sometimes in life we have to face our fears.”

Money raised will go to The Mayor’s Appeal Fund which supports his chosen charities: Maggie’s Oldham, Action Oldham Fund, and Ghazali Trust, and other local charities.

He has spent his Mayoral year, which ends this month, fundraising as well as visiting local schools, charities, organisations and events.

All donations for The Mayor’s Appeal Fund would be gratefully received and can be made direct to: The Mayor’s Office, Civic Centre, Oldham, OL1 1UJ or 0161 770 4012. Any cheques should be made payable to: The Mayor’s Appeal Fund.
