THREE SUCCESSIVE top 10 finishes has lifted Moorside motorcycle racer Ashley Beech up to 12th place in the National Superstock 1000 Championship.

After a season plagued by mechanical and technical problems, the 28-year-old has finally overcome the glitches and is making a strong finish to the campaign.

Beech arrived at Donington Park, Derbyshire, for the 11th and penultimate round of this season’s championship full of confidence on the back of a season’s best sixth place in the previous race at Oulton Park, Cheshire.

The hard work by Beech and his team to develop the new BMW S1000RR race bike had started to come together.

Heavy rain during Friday practise saw very few riders take to the circuit yet Beech as keen to try some minor adjustments, although not a great deal was learned in such tricky conditions.

The weather improved for the first of two qualifying sessions and Beech set some impressive lap times to finish eighth quickest.

The team made changes to the gearing so that Beech had more corner exit speed which increases his speed along the straights but, despite improving his lap times, he slipped to 10th place and would start from row four on the grid.

Beech was recorded third fastest through the speed trap, but he felt something was not quite right with the bike. On inspection the team technicians found that the carbon fibre exhaust casing had overheated causing the bike to lose power.

A fellow competitor offered to lend the team a spare exhaust system which was

fitted in time for the race. And what a dramatic race it turned out to be when an incident involving two riders brought out the safety car before the red flag halted the race as debris was strewn across the track.

Beech again began well after the restart and fought hard to cross the finish line in eighth place, his third consecutive top 10 finish which moves him up to 12th place in the overall table.

The final round of the championship is at Brands Hatch on Sunday, October 16.
