SADDLEWORTH SCHOOL’S year 11 rugby team signed off the season in style by lifting the Oldham Schools’ Cup.
They clinched the cup with a 28-18 victory against Waterhead which was their fifth consecutive win in the competition.
But it was not without some anxious moments as Saddleworth were 18-12 behind before head boy Matthew Fletcher scored two tries to spark a memorable fightback.
It was also the fifth successive year in which the year 11 team has won the Oldham Schools’ Cup.
SW13 Lions, the rugby team comprising players from Saddleworth School and Waterhead Academy, made it two wins out of two with a hard-fought 28-24 victory at St John Fisher, Wigan.

Having opened up a 12 point lead in the second half, it looked as though the Lions would cruise to victory but a gutsy fight back from the hosts meant that only a couple of missed conversions from Fisher separated the sides at the final whistle as the Lions nervously held on.
Try scorers for the Lions were Macauley Jones (2), Leon Hurley, Jack Marland and Rob Charles. Josh Allen (3) and Josh Molloy added the conversions while Jamie Cattermole was player of the match.
There have been further basketball successes as the year seven and senior teams were both crowned Oldham Schools’ League champions on finals night at Hulme.
The year seven’s overcame Failsworth and the senior team defeated a much improved Oldham Academy North side.
Outstanding performances on the night came from Ethan Buckley, Joe Knightly and Elijah Wolstenholme for the year seven teamwhile Kieran Weltz and Allistair Lloyd were in terrific form for the seniors.
The year nine team lost to Failsworth but should be commended on reaching the final.
