NEW AND old joined together on the political path as two Labour candidates handed in their nomination papers.

For Debbie Abrahams it was her first nomination for re-election in while Michael Meacher has represented Oldham since 1970.

Mrs Abrahams, parliamentary candidates for Oldham East and Saddleworth, said: “I’m so proud to have represented Oldham East and Saddleworth over the last four years during which time I have helped over 6,500 constituents.

“If re-elected I will continue my work to reduce inequalities, develop a Dementia Friendly Oldham and tackle late payments to small businesses. I will fight for fair rail fares and to improve rail services at Greenfield station.

“Above all I will continue to work hard for all residents in Oldham East and Saddleworth, not just a privileged few.”

Mr Meacher, standing in Oldham West and Royton, added: “It’s been the greatest privilege of my life to represent Oldham since 1970.

“Unfortunately the number of constituents needing advice and support has risen dramatically in the last few years because of the present Government’s austerity programme, that has adversely effected so many people.

“If elected I would fight to end austerity and fight to raise living standard for the residents of Oldham who have had such a raw deal in the last five years.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of the election and meeting local residents.”
