WHAT BETTER stocking filler for Christmas than a new book charting the colourful and sometimes controversial history of Oldham Athletic.
“Oldham Athletic: A Pictorial History” (Amberley Publishing, £12.99) has been written by Independent sports editor Tony Bugby.
It was back in 1996 that the last history of Latics was published to coincide with 100 years at Boundary Park.
In the intervening 18 years it has been a rollercoaster ride in which the club has had a spell in administration, been relegated to the third tier of English football and almost slipped to the basement division on a number of occasions.
There have been brightspots, notably FA Cup victories against Manchester City, Everton and Liverpool as the club has maintained its tradition of being renowned cup giantkillers from the days when Joe Royle took the team to Wembley and two semi finals of the FA Cup.
The book charts the eventful history of the club stemming back to 1895 when it was born following a meeting in a local pub, the Junction Inn.
