The lift was formally declared ready for use by nine-year-old Sam Brogden, whoattends the church with his family and enjoyed the first ride to the upper floor after cutting the ribbon.

The Church had long wanted to provide easy access to upstairs for its members and community visitors unable to climb stairs.

During their double centenary celebrations last year, it was decided the installation of a lift would be a suitable legacy for the future.

With support from the Methodist Church, the Tanner Trust, the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership and other charitable trusts, they turned this dream into a reality.

Local tradesman Gary Wright carried out necessary building work before the lift was supplied by Dalby Lifts of Leicester and installed by Somerset-based Liftech.org Ltd.

Church Steward Dorothy Roberts said: “The whole church family has come together to achieve this important goal.

“Members of our Property Committee have worked tirelessly to ensure our premises are accessible to the whole community and we are grateful for their time and commitment.”

Michael Hall, Chairman of the Property Committee added: “We would particularly like to pay tribute to Barrie Simpson who has used his knowledge and expertise toproject-manage this work.

“Without his commitment and dedication, the lift project would never have got off the ground!”
