New committee announced for Saddleworth Royal British Legion

The Saddleworth Branch of the Royal British Legion is beginning a new chapter following a period of transition, with a new committee in place and plans to strengthen its links with the local community.

The new committee is led by Chairwoman Sarah Shilton, alongside Secretary Jacky Clowes and Treasurer Stephen Howard.

They are joined by committee members Reverend Ken McNally, Michael Hall and Lyndsay McNally, while Paul Shilton and Alison Clowes will serve as Standard Bearers.

The committee’s focus is on moving the Saddleworth Branch forward while ensuring existing members remain informed, involved and able to play a part in shaping its future.

There are also plans to raise the Branch’s profile across Saddleworth and encourage more people to get involved with the Royal British Legion.

Chairwoman Sarah Shilton said: “We are really looking forward to working together and building on the history and traditions of the Saddleworth Branch.

“We want our existing members to feel involved and informed, but we also want people throughout Saddleworth to know that the Royal British Legion is here and that there are many different ways to get involved.

“The Legion means so much to so many people. You don’t necessarily have to have served yourself to become involved. Many people have family connections to the Armed Forces or simply want to support veterans, serving personnel and their families.”

Sarah added: “We have a great team of people who have stepped forward to help take the Branch into its next chapter, and we are very much looking forward to becoming a more active part of the Saddleworth community.”

Branch Members’ Meetings will be held at Uppermill Conservative Club, 75 High Street, Uppermill, at 8pm on the last Thursday of every third month.

The next meeting will be the Branch’s Annual General Meeting on Thursday, November 26, 2026.

Future meetings are scheduled for February 25, May 27 and August 26, 2027.

All Branch members are encouraged to attend the meetings, meet the new committee, share ideas and help shape the future of the Saddleworth Branch.

The committee is also preparing for one of the busiest periods in the Royal British Legion calendar, with the annual Poppy Appeal and Remembrance period approaching.

The Branch is welcoming volunteers who can spare time to support the Poppy Appeal. Whether people can offer a few hours or more, the committee says every contribution will be appreciated.

Plans for local Remembrance commemorations are also being developed, with further details on events, times and locations due to be shared with members and the wider community once arrangements are confirmed.
