New five-year lease is big boost for Satellite Centre

OLDHAM Council leader Sean Fielding has endorsed his support for the Satellite Centre in Greenfield in a recent meeting with trustees, offering an extension of its rolling one-year licence to a five-year lease.

“The borough is not awash with money, so we’ll be asking the trustees to pay more of the bills from now on,” explained Cllr Fielding, “but that’s a small price to pay for the excellent range of services and activities offered at this thriving community centre.”

Presently, the centre on Wellington Road is fully occupied for 85 percent of the available time from Monday to Saturday, attracting a wide range of age groups to join its varied programme.

“We’ve only been open as a community centre for two years, but what we offer is already having a positive impact on people’s lives,” said Trustee Chair Mike Rooke.

“This isn’t a love-in, but during this time we’ve enjoyed fulsome support from our local councillors and from the Saddleworth and Lees District team.”

Headlined by a flagship Body, Mind and Well-being project, the Satellite’s wide-ranging programme supports people’s emotional health and physical fitness.

It is also home to a variety of groups and activities for all ages, from YoLo youth group, babyballet, and slimming groups to music groups, Reiki network and community brew sessions.

“The borough is keen to acknowledge how centres like the Satellite serve as health hubs for the community,” said Cllr Fielding. “Such places have a dynamic and enriching impact on people’s lives.”

With such encouragement, the trustees are keen to build on the good work undertaken so far in the last two years and are now looking towards the centre’s long-term future.

The centre boasts a spacious and bright downstairs room with option to use an attached well-equipped kitchen area, a large split-level upstairs space with high spec sound system, and a small office space available for daytime hire.
