AN ancient karate tradition is settling into a new home at The Satellite Centre in Greenfield.
Since June this year, the Komayaka Karate Club has been holding training sessions for children in the centre’s main hall upstairs on Tuesday evenings.
The large open area upstairs gives plenty of space for this activity, with a superb soft-seated rest area that is used in break times.
The ‘not for profit’ martial arts club teaches Karate in the traditional art of Shukokai and runs sessions every Tuesday from 6-8pm at the centre on Wellington Road.
Quality instruction is provided by Chief Instructor Garry Lewis 5th Dan along with Assistant Instructors Mike Wilde 5th Dan and Duwain Chase 3rd Dan.
Feedback from parents so far has been very positive, include: “I’d just like to say thanks for all the help and effort you and the team put in”.
Another added: “Thanks for all your hard work running the club. It has really helped to bring Adam out of himself and make some new friends.”
Karate originated in Okinawa and is a method of training your mind, body and spirit to act as one.
Children who get involved in martial arts reap many benefits including self-confidence, coordination and self-discipline.
Lessons are run in a friendly environment, hence the name Komayaka, which is a Japanese word that translates to “friendly”.
The club is a member of the United Kingdom All Styles Karate Organisation and affiliated to the English Karate Federation. All instructors have professional indemnity insurance and have been Enhanced DBS checked.
Anyone interested is welcome to come along and watch a session. Until a student’s first grading, no Karate Gi is required.
