LOCALS left disappointed by the cancellation of the popular Christmas Eve Tractor Run have a special festive treat in store – as a new one is following in its tracks.
Saddleworth Tractor Group announced in October that their early-awaited annual parade will not take place this year due to concerns over the high number of people and vehicles taking part.
Thousands of people usually line the area’s streets to watch the festive fundraising parade rumble past, featuring dozens of farm vehicles decorated with lights and sounds.
But the group said at the time: “Without assistance from the police and local authority, the event has become too big for a handful of volunteers to run safely.
“The number of spectators and tractors has increased dramatically over the past few years and with that, the possibility of an accident has greatly increased.
“The safety of the public is our main concern. If an accident was to occur, the organisers would be held responsible. These factors have prompted our decision.”
However, a poster that is spreading around the community and online confirms that a similar event will be coming to Saddleworth’s streets on December 24.
It reads: “Christmas Eve in Saddleworth just wouldn’t feel the same without the sight of a tractor or two.
“This year, a group of local residents have, by happy coincidence, decided to head out on their tractors at the very same time, bringing a bit of festive cheer to the hills.
“A charity close to many hearts has also been chosen. Inspired by our local hero (Kevin Sinfield), who completed seven ultra-marathons for his friend, we wanted to carry forward the true meaning of Christmas: kindness, community, and giving. This year, we’ll be proudly supporting the MND charity.”
The parade will take the following route (times are approximate):
- Start at The Hanging Gate in Diggle 5pm
- Dobcross 5.15pm
- Delph 5.30pm
- Uppermill 5.45pm
- The Royal George, Greenfield 6pm
- The Clarence, Greenfield 6.15pm
- Uppermill 6.45pm
- Finish back in Diggle at The Hanging Gate 7pm
