LOCAL HOCKEY player Nicola White is on the road to Rio after being selected for the senior international women’s programme.
The 25-year-old, who began her playing days at Saddleworth Hockey Club, is one of ten medallists from London 2012 who have been chosen to prepare for the next Olympic Games in Brazil.
Nicola, already a veteran of 86 international caps for either England or Great Britain, is excited to be a member of the 29-strong squad and to be part of the build-up to the next Olympics.
She said: “Ten members of the team which won the bronze medal in London are back, but a number of players have retired.
“This will be a new group which, while including plenty of experience, contains a lot of younger players.”
Nicola will be in action in June for Great Britain when they take part in the World League Tournament in Chiswick.
It has been a hectic time for Nicola, whose grandmother lives in Dobcross, as she has been combining studies with competing.
She played for her club side Leicester in the European outdoor championships in Hamburg, Germany, where they just missed out on reaching the semi-finals.
That was followed by reigning champions Leicester finishing runners-up to Reading in the Investec Women’s Finals. Leicester won the league, but in the play-offs involving the top four sides they were piped by Reading.
“We lost on penalties after extra time which is a sad way to be beaten,” explained Nicola.
Nicola is also in the throes of completing her sports science degree at Loughborough University which has stretched to seven years because of interruptions caused by her playing commitments.
