Northern comedy promises to be another hit for Oldham theatre

Lyceum Theatre Oldham continues this season’s success with a proper Northern comedy, BILLY LIAR.

rows-green-logo-resizedKeith Waterhouse and Willis Hall’s play is set in a made-up Yorkshire town in the early 1960s and follows the tale of nineteen-year-old Billy Fisher who lives with his parents and grandmother.

Billy survives his mundane life by escaping into fantasy worlds where he is in the army, moving to London or getting engaged to every girl in town.

The trouble is he doesn’t keep the fantasies in his head. He wreaks havoc with his family and friends and even the audience loses track of fact and fiction.

Lyceum Theatre Oldham have taken on the challenge of this iconic Northern comedy to explore the talents of three generations of actors in the community.

The challenge also lies in a complex, realistic single set which, in addition to the main playing area of the living room, incorporates stairs and outside space, which are all integral to the plot.

The set is designed and built by a team of enthusiastic and talented volunteers, whose DIY skills have been praised by audiences and critics for recent sets such as OF MICE AND MEN and THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE.

Lyceum Theatre Oldham would welcome more volunteers, particularly those with a flare for DIY. Anyone interested should call and leave a message or pop in on a Monday evening.

BILLY LIAR by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall will run at Lyceum Theatre Oldham from 8-16 April at 7.30pm (no performance Sunday 10 April).

All tickets cost £8 and can be booked online lyceumtheatre.org.uk or by calling the book office: 0161 627 1032.
