MILLGATE Arts Centre is set to transport audiences back to the electrifying heart of 1970s Northern Soul when Once Upon a Time in Wigan takes to the stage.
Tickets are already selling fast for the production at the Delph venue, written by Micky Martin, which runs from February 7 to 14.
Presented by The Saddleworth Players, Once Upon a Time in Wigan is a powerful celebration of a unique musical movement that shaped a generation – a time before raves and modern club culture, when dance floors, rare soul records and all-night venues defined youth identity.
The story follows Eugene, a butcher’s assistant from Bolton, played by Cameron Kennedy, and his mate Danny (Harry Garrity), as they search for meaning in what feels like an otherwise bleak existence.
Eugene’s passion for soul music introduces him to Maxine (Niamh Connor), sparking a turbulent romance that mirrors the highs and lows of the era’s most infamous nightclub scenes.
Meanwhile, Maxine’s friend Suzanne (Eleanor Prestwich) longs to fill a void of her own, raising the question of whether Northern Soul – and Danny – might hold the answer.
Set against the shifting social, political and cultural landscape of 1970s Britain, the play charts how two couples come of age during a time of profound change.
Audience members should note that the production contains strong language and references to drugs, which some may find offensive.
Tickets are priced at £12.50 for adults and £6.25 for under-18s, with evening performances taking place throughout the week – starting at 7.30pm at the Stoneswood Road venue.
