OLD-FASHIONED dishes and desserts are going down a treat at the Old Mill Restaurant in Springhead.
Joan Cartwright took over the restaurant, based at Old Mill House extra care court, 18 months ago and serves up a tasty menu five days a week from noon-2pm for residents and the public.
There are all the old favourites including fish and chips, gammon and eggs, rag puddings and an array of pies such as cheese and onion, steak and cow heel and braised steak and onion.
Those with a sweet tooth can tuck into delicious puddings including chocolate fudge cake, trifle, bread and butter pudding, crumbles, cheesecake, and ice-cream.
Joan prides herself on making everything fresh with the help of her hard-working team and using high quality ingredients from local sources.
And it all comes at a very reasonable price, costing £4.50 for a main course (£3 for children) and £2 for a dessert.
Joan, former landlady at the White House at Oldham Edge, said: “We’re going from strength to strength and feed about 150 people a week!
“But a lot of people still don’t know we’re here because we’re off the main road and some people think it is just a home for old people – but it’s not.”
The restaurant can seat 28 people and the tables are brightly laid out with linen, cutlery and flowers.
The weekly menu is shared with residents and on Facebook to attract visitors, and Wednesday is designated for roast dinners, while they can also host special events and group bookings.
Dedicated Joan, whose day often starts at 4.30am to bake pies and puddings, revealed she came across the opportunity by chance after meeting court manager Dianne Hayes at a school reunion event.
“I went to The Blue Coat for a school reunion and met Dianne there and she was looking for someone to come into the restaurant and cook traditional food,” Joan explained.
“My husband had recently died and I needed something to keep me busy – and this does but I enjoy it as well.”
For residents not able to make it down to the restaurant, the team deliver meals to their rooms and also run a delivery service to people across the community.
Joan also offers hot and cold catering services across the borough, including catering for special occasions and her pies and rag puddings can be ordered from the restaurant.
Dianne, Court Manager at the Housing 21 property, said: “Thanks to Joan and her team, the restaurant has become the heart of our community at Old Mill House.
“It is always busy with residents and their families and visitors from the local community. Joan will always go the extra mile to make sure they get a good and varied meal choice.
“She has very quickly become part of our Old Mill family. What would we ever do without her!”
