A CELEBRATED modern Requiem and a dramatic work by one of opera’s greatest composers will feature in a special afternoon of music next month.
Music lovers can look forward to an afternoon of choral music as Oldham Choral Society prepares to perform two contrasting works at its forthcoming concert.
The choir will perform Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light alongside Giacomo Puccini’s Messa di Gloria on Sunday, November 1.
The programme will combine the reflective beauty of a modern Requiem with the sweeping melodies of the Italian composer.
Eternal Light is a moving contemporary work which brings together words from the Latin Mass with English poetry, offering a fresh perspective on the traditional Requiem.
In contrast, Puccini wrote Messa di Gloria when he was just 18. The work is filled with dramatic melodies that hint at the operatic style he would later become famous for.

The concert will be conducted by the society’s musical director, David Cane, with tenor soloist Brian McNamee and baritone soloist Andrew Wickens.
They will be accompanied by a string ensemble, with Gary Hulme on organ and Duncan Robertson on piano.
The performance takes place at St Paul’s Church on Church Street in Royton, from 4pm.
Tickets cost £15, with concessions priced at £5 for students and people receiving Universal Credit or Pension Credit. Under-18s can attend for £1.
They can be purchased online at www.oldhamchoralsociety.org.uk, by calling the ticket secretary on 07768 167178, or on the door.
