Kevin Shaw, Oldham Coliseum Theatre’s Artistic Director and Chief Executive, has been shortlisted for Theatre Manager of the Year 2016 at the prestigious UK Theatre Awards.
UK Theatre promotes excellence and professional development, and campaigns to improve resilience and increase audiences across the sector.
Founded in 1991, the annual UK Theatre Awards are the only nationwide awards to honour creative excellence and the outstanding achievement seen on and off stage throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Kevin has been nominated for his outstanding contribution to Oldham Coliseum Theatre, both as an artist and its Chief Executive since 2002.
He is responsible for establishing the artistic vision for the company, the leadership, strategic development, the programming and the instigation and implementation of all operations at Oldham Coliseum Theatre.
He said: “I’m delighted to be nominated; it’s a fantastic recognition of the work of all of the staff at the Coliseum.
“It doesn’t feel like I’ve been here for 14 years but when you consider the work the Coliseum has produced in that time, the impact the theatre has on life in Oldham and the passionate way our audiences feel, you see the importance of the theatre to its community.
“UK Theatre are Britain’s leading theatre and performing arts organisation and it’s fantastic to be recognised by them for myself, and everyone in the team.”
Kevin directs between four and five of the Coliseum’s eight in-house theatre productions per year and oversees the work of guest directors.
Since 2002 he has directed nearly 60 productions for the theatre ranging from pantomime through thrillers, musicals, historical drama adaptations of novels and comedy.
Kevin also co-writes the theatre’s highly acclaimed annual pantomime with Fine Time Fontayne and has a long-standing commitment to new writing, exploring forms of popular theatre and commissioning Northern stories that establish a confident regional voice.
He commissions, produces and directs at least two world premieres per year, from either emerging or established playwrights.
Kevin is also Chief Executive of the company and consequently responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of the broader functionality of the Coliseum.
He oversaw the 11-month refurbishment of the Coliseum and in the period that the theatre was dark produced six Coliseum shows, including two that went on national tour.
Kevin has worked closely in partnership with Oldham Council to realise a project which will, subject to confirmation of funding, lead to the opening of a new £25m Oldham Coliseum Theatre in Oldham in 2019-20.
Other nominees for Theatre Manager of the Year 2016 are Diane Belding, General Manager of Liverpool Empire Theatre and Neil Chandler, General Manager of New Wimbledon Theatre.
The Coliseum has also been nominated for the Promotion of Diversity Award at the UK Theatre Awards for its work with urban, diverse schools across Oldham and Rochdale in its Education Partnerships scheme, launched in September 2013 supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation.
The UK Theatre Awards will be presented on 9 October 2016 at a ceremony at London’s Guildhall, presented by Lesley Manville. Find out more online on the website.
