Oldham Coliseum call on public vote to help them win £27,000 funding for young people

OLDHAM+COLISEUM+LOGO_Red+and+Black+smallOLDHAM COLISEUM Theatre is calling on the public to vote for them to win £27,000 to support The Teaching Theatre, helping Oldham’s young unemployed people into work, education and positive life choices.

The NatWest Skills and Opportunities Fund is committing £2.5m to fund projects by charities, social enterprises, community groups, state-funded schools and colleges across the UK and Ireland.

The focus for the funding is to support organisations that help people in disadvantaged communities develop, create or access the skills and opportunities to get into work or start a business.

The funders have split the country into seven regions and in the North is looking for projects that serve the disadvantaged such as young people with a lack of opportunities, people with disabilities or minority groups.

And the Oldham Coliseum is one of 15 finalists hoping to win the £27,000 fund after a public vote, which ends on Friday, November 6 at 12noon.

Their ‘Teaching Theatre’ scheme engages young people backstage, giving them work experience in the technical and administrative aspects of theatre, graduating with a portfolio, CV and an Arts Award.

Young people, who are excluded from education and employment opportunities, work alongside the Coliseum’s professional teams to develop employability skills through practical and creative activities.

In 2014/15, the inaugural year-long Teaching Theatre programme resulted in a 100 per cent success rate in helping young NEETS into work and apprenticeships.
