Oldham Council honours long-serving foster carers at special celebration evening

Oldham Council has held a special celebration evening to say thank you to its foster carers.

The event, held at Oldham Events Centre recognised the valuable contribution foster carers make to the borough’s most vulnerable children and young people.

The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Shadab Qumer presented awards to the dedicated carers who have served between five and 15 years, as well as special awards.

Councillor Jenny Harrison, Cabinet Member for Social Care and Safeguarding, said: “The celebration evening is our way of saying a special thank you to all our foster carers who do an amazing job looking after our children and young people.

“To say that they make a difference is a massive understatement. Our foster carers change the lives of so many of Oldham’s children and young people and for this we are truly grateful.”

Foster carers Alec and Clare Matthews received their 10 years long service award from Mayor of Oldham Shadab Qumer

Anyone can apply to foster regardless of their marital status, sexuality, race or religion, whether they are in employment or not, or have a disability. All we ask is that they are over 21, enjoy working with children and have room in their home.

Foster carers receive extensive and on-going support, including their own highly trained social worker, a 24/7 emergency line, comprehensive training and a generous financial package.
