Smokers across Oldham are being encouraged to kick the habit this October as part of the UK’s annual mass quit attempt – Stoptober.
The number of smokers accounts for 24.5 per cent of Oldham’s population – higher than the national average of 19.8 per cent – and costs tens’ of millions of pounds every year.

Stoptober, which is run by Public Health England, starts on Wednesday, October 1 and aims to encourage as many smokers as possible to quit for 28 days.
Lianne Davies, Oldham Health and Wellbeing Manager from Pennine Care, said: “If someone can stop smoking for 28 days, they are five times more likely to quit for good.
“It’s one of the hardest things a person can do, but our experienced staff can provide advice about the best treatments and medications to help, as well as supporting people every step of the way.”
She added: “People will feel the health and financial benefits of giving up smoking almost straight away.”
Alan Higgins, Oldham Director of Public Health, said: “Going without smoking for a month may seem tough – but the benefits are self-evident.
“Knowing there are plenty of others who are taking this step for a healthier life is also a huge reassurance.
“I wish anyone who takes part in Stoptober the best of luck and would like to thank them for playing their part in supporting a smoke free Oldham.”
Last year’s Stoptober campaign saw 863 people in the borough sign up to quit.
People who sign up this year will be sent a free stop smoking pack, mobile phone app and text support with daily updates and advice.
The campaign supported by the North West’s Paddy McGuinness, who will bring a touch of the British sense of humour to help quitters through their challenge.
Oldham’s Stop Smoking Team can provide support and advice and will be on hand throughout October, and beyond, to help.
