Parish Council promises to push for more banking services in Saddleworth

SADDLEWORTH Parish Council has vowed to not give up the fight to have face-to-face banking services in the area – despite ‘a real step forward.’

Vernon Building Society representatives met with the authority ahead if the opening of its facility in November.

Representatives from Vernon Building Society met with Saddleworth Parish Council ahead of them bringing face-to-face financial services back to the area.

But its chair, Barbara Beeley, has promised to keep fighting for better access to banking facilities.

She said: “We will continue to put pressure on the Government to encourage more banking services into our area.

“But this is a real step forward, with face to face financial planning becoming available in a way that simply wasn’t the case before.”

Stockport-based Vernon Building society announced plans to share premises on Uppermill’s High Street with Pearsons Solicitors, with face-to-face banking services available from 10am until 4pm, Tuesday to Thursday.

Its chief executive Darren Ditchfield and business development manager Ian Wilson met the Parish Council to detail the services they offer with both financial services for both individuals and businesses.

Darren said: “We’re delighted to be bringing face-to-face financial services back to the villages of Saddleworth, which have been without a high street branch for nearly a decade.

“Opening in Uppermill will allow us to offer more convenient access to the personal service they’ve missed.”

Chair Beeley added: “The Parish Council has been firmly committed to getting financial services made available in the community.

“Seeing a building society expanding into the area confirms our belief that there is a market here which banks are currently ignoring, to their detriment.

“Saddleworth is a great place for businesses to invest in, and this is just one example.”
