Paul lands the last major of golf season

SADDLEWORTH GOLF Club’s last major of the season, the Mountain Ash Trophy saw Paul Bolger record a runaway victory in the 36-hole medal.

Paul had nett scores of 64 and 66 for a two-round total of 130 which was six shots clear of Marcus Wray (69 and 67 for 136).

Jonathan Fancy (69 and 68 for 137) was third.

Alan Ramsden (68) won the first-day prize and honours in the second round went to Stuart Frist (65).

Meanwhile, there was a four way tie for top spot in the President’s Invitation.

The winners following a card play-off were Nick Kerin and Mark Riley from runners-up Steve Wild and Chris Cordwell.

Third were Steve and Ian Castle while fourth place went to Denis Lamb and Norman Stanley as all four played returned 44 points in the Stableford.

Saddleworth’s Roger Devy and P Richardson triumphed in the seniors’ open scoring 45 points in the Stableford, one clear of a visiting pair from Whittaker.

The best score by a pair with a combined age of over 140 years was 43 points by Saddleworth’s Michael Shore and John Davis.

Saddleworth were winners of the Oldham PVC Trophy as they made it a hat trick of victories in the Oldham and District Past Captains weekend at Carden Park, Chester.

The team of captain Andy Dunster, vice-captain Charles Nicholson, past captain Gary Simpson and president Allan Entwistle had a team score of 165, 14 shots clear of

runners-up Crompton and Royton.

The ladies’ autumn meeting, a five-club Salsa, was won by Sonia Dunn, Jenny Knight and Eileen Waddington with a team score of 64 points in the Stableford.

Runners up with 61 points were Fiona Heston, Barbara Shuttleworth and Ann Walsh.

The Lady Captain’s Prize, a Stableford, was won by Fiona Heston (39pts) on the card from Pam Tomlinson.

Pam Taylor lifted the Marian Taylor Trophy with a Stableford score of 37 points from second-placed Denise Brown (33pts).

And the clear winner of the EGWA Medal and Bunty Booth qualifier by a margin of seven shots was Ann Allen (88-22-66) from Sue Booth (96-23-73).
