Police appeal for witnesses after attempted rape at Oldham bus stop

GMP logoPOLICE ARE urging witnesses to come forward with information after a man attempted to rape a woman in Oldham.

Shortly before 10:50pm on 27 September 2015, a 45-year-old woman was sat at a bus stop on West Street in Oldham town centre when she was approached by a man.

The man engaged her in conversation before he assaulted her and attempted to rape her.

The attacker is described as a 5ft 10in tall Asian man, approximately 18-21-years old of slim build with dark hair that is cut into a short ‘back and sides’ style.

He was wearing dark denim jeans, a faded burgundy sweater or hoody with lettering on the front and black shoes or pumps.

Police believe this to be an isolated incident and have increased patrols in the area.

Detective Inspector Mark McDowall said: “This is a horrible incident where a woman has been attacked as she was waiting for the bus to go home.

“She is understandably very shook up and is being provided with support from specially trained officers.

“The town centre is a busy place, even at this time on a Sunday night, and we believe that a number of cars with potential witnesses inside drove past whilst the attack was happening.

“If anybody has any information then I would urge them to please come forward.

“For local reassurance, along with partners, we have increased neighbourhood patrols in the area but I would like to stress that we believe this to be an isolated incident.”

Anybody with information should contact police on 0161 856 8927 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
