POLICE OFFICERS have taken to social media in a bid to engage with local residents better and keep them updated.
Oldham Borough Neighbourhood Police are urging the public to subscribe to their Facebook, Twitter and their Homewatch and Ewatch links to receive the latest information and news.
And they hope using the sites will also create a better way for the public to communicate any neighbourhood issues to them.
In a letter to residents, Inspector Karen Taylor and Inspector James Troisi explained their aims behind the project.
They said: “As a neighbourhood policing team we often find it difficult to communicate issues, incidents and events in your area to everyone’s satisfaction.
“As a result we are promoting our social media sites and homewatch links in an effort to update you with anything that is relevant to you and your area and also as a means of you communicating with us regarding neighbourhood issues.”
They continued: “We currently have two operations in this area working with the local council and partners to address anti-social behaviour and tackle crime. It is important to us that you are aware of the work which is on-going to tackle these issues.
“Facebook will update you on any events/incidents in your area, as will twitter and E-watch.
“The benefit of these systems is we are reporting incidents as soon as practically possible thus engaging the community to assist if they see anything suspicious and advice is given on how to protect your properties.”
They added: “Obviously not every one of you will have access to the internet so we are visiting areas to establish what means of contact you would like and also if you would be interested in joining the homewatch scheme.
“We do want to increase the valuable links we have with our communities and this is one step forward to achieving this.”
To join any of these schemes please send an email to: Oldhamborough@gmp.police.uk entitled Ewatch, Twitter, Homewatch or Facebook and you will be included on the mailing system.
